That’s seems quite scary! We believe we are so advanced as a society, technologically with a current march to use AI for everything & yet we share 60% common DNA with a soft fruit! ( no offence to any banana lovers! )
So what’s our close connection to this much loved soft fruit got to do with franchising? Well it demonstrates that just a 40% difference in DNA is the difference between something that is the dominant species on the planet to something that is mashed up as baby food!
The same applies to franchising a business. A businesses DNA is it’s brand, model & method, it’s modus operandi. This is what makes the business work when it becomes a franchise because of this proven formulae, the DNA is replicated. I have recently spoken to several business owners that want to franchise their businesses but they wanted to change this DNA. Sometimes these were changes to the cost structures, others were the systems & daily operations. The motives for performing this Frankenstein style experiment ranged from becoming more profitable as a franchisor to just plan making life much easier day to day.
When you make changes to the DNA of the business you do not know what mutation will happen & how that’s going to effect the success of the business & value of your brand. Any changes therefore need to be very carefully considered & TESTED. Just like laboratory research you need to thoroughly test the changes you make to your businesses DNA, first in a small, closely monitored trial. Not all DNA changes of course are bad, we have evolved as a species over thousands of years, with our DNA being mutated through the generations, but, when you have a winning formula in business, stick to it & be extremely careful when you make any changes.
